Quote enquiry vs hard enquiry: what lands on your credit file

Credit score Updated 14 October 2026

Every time a lender looks at your credit file, the look itself gets recorded. What kind of look it was decides whether your score notices.

The two kinds of enquiry

A hard enquiry (sometimes called a credit application enquiry) is recorded when you actually apply for credit and a lender assesses you for it. Hard enquiries are visible to other lenders, and several in a short window read as a warning sign: scoring models treat a burst of applications as a borrower under pressure.

A quote enquiry is a special enquiry type NZ bureaus provide for exactly one purpose: letting you shop for a rate without the shopping counting against you. A quotation enquiry is recorded on your file, but it is treated differently by scoring and is not meant to be read by other lenders the way an application is.

The practical difference is blunt. Five hard enquiries in a month can genuinely hurt your chances. Five quote enquiries should not.

Why this matters when you shop for a loan

Everyone tells you to compare lenders. MoneyHub, Sorted and every sensible adviser say get several quotes. But if comparing means filling in five application forms, the comparison itself damages the thing being priced. It is the catch-22 of credit shopping, and the quote enquiry exists to resolve it.

So the question to ask any lender or broker before you give them your details is simple: “Will this be recorded as a quote enquiry or a credit application?” A straight answer to that question tells you a lot about who you are dealing with.

When a hard enquiry is right and proper

A hard enquiry is not a bad thing. It is the normal, correct record of you actually proceeding with a loan. The point is sequence: the hard enquiry should happen once, at the end, when you have chosen your offer and asked the lender to go ahead, not five times at the start while you were only asking prices.

How BorrowClub handles it

One application with BorrowClub covers the whole panel, so comparing lenders never means a pile of applications. Checking your rate is handled as a quote, and a hard enquiry only happens if you accept an offer and ask that lender to proceed. The exact way our rate check is recorded with Centrix, Equifax and illion is published on this site, in plain English, as part of how we work.

If you have not looked at your file lately, start with what a good credit score in NZ looks like, then check your own file free with each bureau. Your own checks never affect the score.
